ADVANCED SYSTEM ~ FIRE

The Advanced workout cultivates mastery of the six principles of Pilates: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow. The workout is smooth and efficient. The movements are precise and intentional. The transitions are fluid; the breath is in harmony with the movements; the strength is both deep and easy.

You and your clients will cultivate the Advanced workout for many years without complete mastery. As this work is about being in the present moment, advancement and refinement are always available. Teach your clients to embody the principles in their workouts, which will positively affect the quality of their lives. Teach your clients to work out efficiently and gracefully, rather than working out fast and hard. Advancing requires dedication and frequent workouts in the studio. You and your client will find it difficult to progress with one workout per week. True advancement requires the commitment of three focused workouts per week.

Many of the Advanced System exercises require great control of the body in space; for example, being upside down challenges balance and concentration. Build these exercises carefully and over time. Progress on each apparatus, including the Mat, simultaneously. There is no hurry. There is no competition. Performing every Advanced exercise is not necessary to be an Advanced level Pilates student or instructor. Owning your workout, maintaining connection of mind to body, knowing how to engage the powerhouse in all planes of movement, and working toward embodying the Pilates principles - these are the practices that define an Advanced practitioner.

Practice with safety and teach with safety. Each exercise builds upon other exercises. Ensure that you and your client are prepared before attempting the most advanced exercises. Many of the Advanced exercises require practitioner independence - therefore your role as the instructor is to prepare the client, to be clear and direct with your verbal cues, and to be present with hands-on work. You must have confidence, as you are helping the client to build confidence.

Practice with a smile. Remembering this is a fun time, we are capable of amazing things, and Pilates lights up the spirit just as much as it lights up the body. Sweat. Play. Get after it!
